Environmental Education Teacher

Love inspiring children by teaching awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the natural world? Pacific Science Center is looking for the right candidates to teach science-based environmental education programs at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue. MSEEC Educators teach awareness, understanding, appreciation, and a sense of stewardship for the natural world, through science-based environmental education programs.

The Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center is a partnership, collaboration between Pacific Science Center and City of Bellevue, Washington. In the summer we run environmental education-focused day camps for ages K-8 with a wide variety of themes. During the school year we teach programs to school groups, scouts, and families.

Our Educators bring a variety of programs to life and inspire guests of all kinds. The ideal candidate will have the following: Experience teaching elementary age students; Group management skills; Flexibility and the ability to think on your feet during unexpected and stressful situations; Excellent communication skills including a high level of comfort with large groups; Ability to maintain enthusiasm and positive outlook; Smiling team player; Knowledge of fresh water wetlands; WA State Driver’s License or ability to obtain in order to drive 15 passenger van (training provided); First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain

It is important to consider that most programs split their time evenly between indoor labs and outdoor hikes. Educators must be able to work outside in inclement weather and in a variety of conditions including mosquitoes and muddy trails. They must be able to walk 3 miles with students and carry up to 20 pound class bins to and from storage and assisting with carrying and loading of canoes. This is a non-benefited, temporary role through August 2014. There may be opportunities to continue past August, depending on work availability. Hours vary by season. During the spring may work up to 28 hours per week, summer up to 40 hours per week. Working on weekends and nights is occasionally necessary in support of our programs.
