The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA), a science and history-based nonprofit organization on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, is offering eight summer positions in our Discovery Program. The Program’s mission is to provide quality outdoor and environmental learning experiences for Nantucket’s youth and families. We are seeking high-energy, motivated individuals to design and lead science-based classes for children (ages 5 – 15 years old). Candidates will have the opportunity to expand their experiential education teaching skills and the chance to share their passion for the environment with local and visiting children and families.
Responsibilities and Tasks
Capitalizing on the unique natural setting of Nantucket, Environmental Education (EE) Instructors will gain valuable experience in developing and implementing curriculum for a variety of topics relating to both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Program activities include snorkeling, sailing, beach explorations, nature hikes, wetland studies, survival skill instruction, live animal programs, bird watching, orienteering, kayaking, games, art projects, insect collecting, etc. Additional responsibilities may involve assisting with special events, public programs, museum and aquarium operations, Saturday classes & events, and other facets of the Association’s day-to-day operations.
Key Requirements and Qualifications
Applicants must be 18+ to be considered for the position. Ideal candidates must be confident in leading groups (especially of children), initiating activities, working independently, and team-teaching. They should be enthusiastic, flexible, willing to work long hours (possible nights and/or weekends), and be able to live and work well with others. They must, also, feel comfortable in and around ocean and water environments. Prior experience in environmental education, working with elementary-aged children, and/or curriculum development is highly encouraged. A current driver’s license is mandatory.
Instructors receive $2700/summer (June 2nd—August 22nd) which includes housing. Our housing option is located within walking distance of the center of town and is a short bike ride and/or walk to beautiful beaches, bike and hiking trails, museums, and other great locations. EE Instructors will receive certification in Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR as part of their training.
