Energy Program Assistant – Vital Communities

 

Vital Communities Mission: Vital Communities brings citizens, organizations, and municipalities together to take on issues where an independent voice and regional approach are essential.

Energy Program Mission: Move the Upper Valley toward energy independence by catalyzing local efforts in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Responsible To: Energy Program Manager

Effective Date: January 6th, 2014

Location: White River Junction, Vermont

Status: 32 hrs/wk, non-exempt. Temporary (6-months) with possibility for longer-term employment

Vital Communities is excited to be launching the first phase of Solarize Upper Valley this spring, which will team up local communities with pre-selected, competitively chosen solar photovoltaic (PV) installers to make residential-scale solar PV energy more accessible and affordable for residents in our region (more at www.vitalcommunities.org/solarize). The Energy Program Assistant will work with four communities to plan and implement a 15 week community outreach campaign encouraging residents to go solar. Additional duties will include general support for other aspects of Vital Communities’ energy program.

Solarize Upper Valley 

Work with Energy Program Manager to:

• Support participating Solarize communities in developing effective volunteer coordination and community outreach strategies

• Assist with community event planning and execution

• Develop and distribute resources and materials for community outreach teams

• Coordinate between Solarize partners within each community (e.g. installers, volunteers, community leaders) and across the program (e.g. Vital Communities, Sustainable Energy Resource Group, SmartPower, funder(s), stakeholders outside the Upper Valley).

• Solicit interest from communities and solar installers for future phases of Solarize Upper Valley

• Track and share program successes online, with partners, and with local media.

• Perform other administrative tasks as necessary

Work with Energy Program Manager to:

• Plan and execute meetings/events

• Maintain energy blog with program updates and energy-related news

• Directly engage local partners (businesses, municipalities, citizens) in current and developing energy program initiatives

• Perform other administrative tasks as necessary

Minimum expectations/qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree, preferably in communications, environmental studies, or another applicable field

• Understanding of and passion for efficient and renewable energy

• Efficient and effective organization skills, including attention to detail

• Willingness to ask questions and desire to be successful in even the smallest task.

• Optimistic, outgoing, and positive presence when interacting with the public on Vital Communities’ behalf

• Ability to take on a diverse set of tasks and complete them efficiently at one’s own direction

• Strong writing skills

• Basic understanding of PC computing

• Access to personal transportation

 

General Expectations of all Staff 

 Understand and support the mission of Vital Communities as expressed by the Board

 Network with allied organizations and initiatives

 Coordinate and integrate efforts with staff working on other Vital Communities programs

 Actively participate in Vital Communities’ planning, evaluation and development: including annual appeals, newsletter and annual reports, staff retreats and meetings, Board retreats and meetings (as invited), and other outreach systems including blogs and the website

 Greet the public through all channels of communication with courtesy and respect

 Work in a safe manner and report any safety hazards to the Executive Director

 Maintain individual work station and office in a clean, attractive manner

 Practice good work habits of flexibility, efficiency, punctuality, dependability, and confidentiality

 Strive to upgrade existing skills and learn new ones
