Educational Coordinator

Founded in 1829, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society is a member-supported organization,
dedicated to encouraging and improving the science and practice of horticulture and developing the public’s enjoyment, appreciation and understanding of plants and the environment.
Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Horticultural Center and Gardens are located on 36-acres in Dover/Wellesley, MA within the historic Elm Bank Reservation (182 acres) which is owned and operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The Gardens at Elm Bank include twelve gardens and four greenhouses. Massachusetts Horticultural Society is a nonprofit education institution that provides educational opportunities for adults and children. Adult programming includes a lecture series,
Thursday Night at the Hort, workshops, and hands-on gardening activities. Youth programs include: the Plantmobile, a traveling horticulture-science van that visits schools and outreach events with horticultural activities, Garden Classroom that connects green industry professionals with schools to help construct school gardens and develop curriculum, Caterpillar Club and Story Time, summer drop-in activities at Elm Bank for pre-schoolers, and gardening camp activities for the Linx camp that is located on the property.
EDUCATION COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION:
The educational coordinator promotes and delivers Mass Hort’s adult and youth educational programs by collaborating with industry professionals, schools, and other nonprofit organizations. Adult Programs: The educational coordinator is responsible for developing educational programs, including booking the professionals that will lecture or lead the
programs, advertising and marketing the programs, setting up on line registration, insuring that all lecture/workshop logistics are in order for the events, and overseeing attendance.

Youth Programs: The educational coordinator is responsible for developing educational programs for youth, including, but not limited to, Elm Bank activities as well as outreach events including flower show and programs in schools, towns, and not for profit organizations. The coordinator will oversee the logistics for all of these programs.

This person works closely with Director of Horticulture, Director of Events, staff, and volunteers.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Youth Education
o Communicates directly with schools for logistics of Plantmobile or other programs
o Communicates with volunteers and teachers and/or prepares and presents Youth Education
o Recommends curriculum appropriate to the schools, students, and learning goals of the
teachers involved
o Manages horticultural inventory and school supplies for the programs that will be delivered
o Coordinates all logistics for program delivery
o Maintains curriculum documents and course materials in order for program
o Coordinates CORI, SORI
o Ensures curriculum is based on Mass Standards
o Develops partnership to increase educational reach of Mass Hort
o Collaborates with other institutions, businesses, and non-profits
• Adult Education
o Works with the Education Committee to determine annual educational offering
o Book lectures and workshops teachers
o Manages the logistics of Thursday Night at the Hort and Workshops
o Hosts or makes arrangements for volunteers to host the program
o Collaborates with other institutions, businesses, and non-profits
•Other
o Must be able to lift 30 pounds
o Ability to work evening, weekends, as required

QUALIFICATIONS:
A successful candidate must have:
• BS in Education, Horticulture, Botany, Environmental Studies (or equivalent)
• Proficiency in Microsoft office, social media, website, online event booking software, and other communications vehicles
• Exceptional communication skills to work with schools, master gardeners and other volunteers,
and nonprofit organizations
•self-starting skills with excellent organizational ability and attention to detail
• 2-3 years experience working in a similar role in a nonprofit or educational setting
• Love of teaching and learning
• Love of plants and horticulture
