Position Title: Instructor

Reports to: Manager of Education

Directly Coordinates

And Supervises: Teaching fellows, students or volunteers assigned to programs.

Position Objective: To responsibly participate in the performance of all the services provided by the Education Department and to creatively execute the educational effort of the Society in sensitizing the public or others to the understanding and needs of the animal kingdom.

Qualifications: Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in biology, ecology, environmental science or education required; Masters degree preferred. At least two years of program development and teaching experience for diverse audiences including adults. Experience and knowledge of incorporating inquiry-based strategies into programming. Candidates should be outgoing, creative and capable of working in a team environment. Must be able to participate in multiple projects at once in a fast paced environment and work flexible hours, including some weekends. Must possess a NYS driver’s license. Bilingual, Spanish speaking a plus.

Principal Responsibilities:

– Conducts programs designed for school groups grades pre-K through 12; teachers, school administrators, adult audiences, and college level students.

– Develops new programs and curricula for pre-k though 12th grade students, adult and college level audiences.

– Plans, researches and writes grade appropriate instructional materials.

– Answers correspondence regarding wildlife and school programs as required.

– Communicates on regular basis with teachers whose classes participate in zoo programs.

– Researches data as needed by the department recommending new educational approaches for programs and/or exhibits.

– Develops methods for incorporating technology usage into Education Department programs.

– Keeps abreast of new literature in ecology and conservation biology, science teaching standards and methods.

– Conducts special demonstrations involving live animals as events may warrant.

– Contributes course ideas for children, family, adult programs to enhance general audience and school catalog offerings.

– Monitors and evaluates performance of teaching fellows.

– Effectively utilizes zoo’s tractable animal collection in programming ; and maintains a program of training with animal liaison to increase the number of animals he/she can use in courses.

– Participates in bi-weekly Bronx Zoo instructor meetings.

– Participates in continuing education opportunities, Society wide educator’s meetings, attend Society scientists talks, workshops or conferences with approval of Manager of Education.

– Maintains cooperative relations with members of other cultural institutions and school systems.

– Represents the Education program at professional conferences to provide program information and conduct related training activities.

– Performs all related tasks and duties as required.

– Contributes to, enlarges and upholds the Society’s policies toward the Equal Employment Opportunities for women, minorities, veterans, the handicapped and other protected groups.
