Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist - (LMSW, Bilingual Chinese)

The Position:Reporting to the Disability Coordinator, the Mental Health Specialist will provide culturally sensitive mental health services for children birth to age 5, including classroom/ child observations, consultations with teachers regarding individual children, parent meetings, referrals for families, parent workshops, parent support groups, staff trainings and mental health support for staff members. He /she also will collaborate with staff, families, community resources and systems to prevent, identify, treat and reduce the impact of mental health problems among children under the age of 5. Work collaboratively with all key stakeholders (staff, external colleagues, parents/guardians of clients) to foster an environment of shared information. Please note that this is a 1-year grant-funded position.

Responsibilities: • Conduct observations of caregiving environment and individual children, design and implement program practices responsive to the identified needs of individual students;
• Educate staff on children’s mental health issues and needs; provide support with individual child behavior and classroom management;
• Provide crisis intervention services and one-on-one modeling or coaching for individual child support;
• Conduct home visits, educate parents on children’s mental health issues and needs and support parents; provide parent workshops and run parent support groups;
• Provide referrals for community mental health services; identify community resources; advocate for the type, frequency and intensity of services that meet the child and family needs;
• Promote social and emotional development in children and transform children’s challenging behaviors;
• Design services and interventions that are culturally and linguistically appropriate and responsive to cultural differences between staff and families as well as among staff members;
• Provide mental health services to staff members;
• Maintain required records and documentation;
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as required by supervisor;
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications: LMSW required, LCSW preferred. Minimum of three years’ experience required working with children birth to age five and their families. Experience with Early Head Start/Head Start and knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards strongly preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish, English/Fujianese or English/Mandarin preferred. Excellent computer and follow-up skills are required, knowledge of Foothold/Awards preferred. Ability to work after hours and occasional weekends is required. Hands-on experience with the Lower East Side community strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of community resources for children and families. Excellent engagement skills and ability to interact with families of diverse religious, cultural and social backgrounds in a culturally competent manner. Ability to observe strict confidentiality and meet deadlines.
