Director, User-Experience and Strategy (Flexible)

The Role
As the Director of User-Experience and Strategy, you will establish our user experience philosophy and help our team conceive, structure, build, iterate, and optimize unforgettable learning experiences through a variety of mediums, media, and teaching strategies. You will lead by example and bring the right balance of heart and head to appeal to the cognitive and affective needs of our staff. You will ensure our learning experiences have a positive brand and are widely-known, sought-after, relevant, accessible, and usable. You will be part of the Strategy and Operations team, which is charged with creating and maintaining the strategic solutions, processes, and tools necessary for the Organizational Effectiveness (OE) team to fulfill its vision of building transformational, diverse leaders at Teach For America. In addition, you will support our team’s operations by consulting with, developing, and implementing strategies and systems to help our team maximize opportunit
ies for collaboration, innovation, and impact. This role is a great opportunity for individuals with a passion for innovation and emerging technologies, exceptional curiosity, critical thinking, organization, communication, and relationship-building skills who are interested in challenging themselves in innovation, project management, and systems improvement. You will report to the Managing Director of Strategy and Operations, and you will work in close partnership with almost all members of the OE team.

Primary Responsibilities

Primarily responsible for bringing forth new ideas to improve the overall user experience (50%)

  • Developing, maintaining and improving the user experience process from strategy through implementation
  • Providing key insights into learner-needs relative to accessing and using learning experiences that inform how we develop programs, experiences, and on-demand content
  • Gauging the usability of new and existing products, and making constructive suggestions for change
  • Providing key insights to develop actionable strategies for marketing and deploying our learning experiences

Leading and managing special team-wide projects as they arise (20%)

Managing ongoing OE team operations (30%)

  • Manage the tools and processes necessary for the team to operate and maximize opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and impact (both within our team and with other teams and regions)
  • Develop and execute user-informed marketing strategies to ensure learning and development trainings and resources are widely known, well understood, and easily accessible
  • Serve as liaison between the OE team and IT, ensuring the team is leveraging technology in smart ways

Prior experience:

  • Minimum 4 -7 years of professional work experience preferred;
  • Implementing emerging technologies to solve user-focused problems;
  • Using data and insights to drive strategy that enables people to be more engaged;
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint (e.g., to tell a story), Prezi, social media and other emerging and innovative technologies;
  • Being a quick-study, self-learner is a huge plus;
  • Knowledge of and experience working in or with Teach For America regions a plus

Work Demands:

  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally (a few times a year at minimum, potentially once/month)


  • Ability to develop and implement new, innovative, and actionable solutions to existing challenges using data and best-practices to inform and drive change
  • Ability to plan and manage projects independently and manage up and across to effectively to ensure key milestones are being met
  • Highly efficient with the ability to manage a number of diverse tasks, activities, and projects, including both tactical and strategic projects
  • Intermediate Excel and PowerPoint Skills, as well as experience working with other technology and social media (Yammer, Prezi, etc.)
  • Ability to build strong, productive relationships with partners on and off the team
  • Exceptional judgment, strong initiative, and ability to quickly adapt to changing organizational context
  • Ability to be flexible and take an optimistic approach to work with an orientation towards being proactive, solutions-focused and helpful
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required
