Deputy Director

Position

A new position, the Deputy Director will take a vital leadership role in the organization, building capacity of our professional and volunteer staff and providing direction to our policy portfolio. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled young professional to shape a growing organization in a dynamic policy environment. The ideal candidate is a former student government executive with strong interest in public policy and 1-3 years of professional experience since college in a start-up, nonprofit, or candidate/issue campaign.

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Deputy Director (DD) will play a crucial role in organizational development, responsible for managing professional and volunteer staff and growing NCLC’s relationships with policymakers and industry experts. The DD will work closely with the ED to effectively implement NCLC programs and will take primary responsibility over policy tracking, analysis, and development on issues related to students nationally. The DD will partner with the ED to develop, implement, and manage all operational aspects of the annual budget.

Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership:

  • Provide effective leadership by being actively involved in all programs and services,developing a broad and deep knowledge of ongoing and new programs.
  • Identify and address short and long term operational priorities and challenges with ED
    • Provide programmatic leadership and input for strategic plan implementation withthe ED and staff
    • Develop and implement a system for tracking and reporting on the progress on all programs and projects

Team Management:

  • Lead, develop, and retain NCLC’s management team with an emphasis on collaborative project implementation and problem solving.
  • Develop and implement training programs and retreats to expand the capacity of staff.
  • Ensure the continued financial viability of NCLC’s operational units through sound fiscal management.

Policy & Outreach:

  • Support ED’s efforts to manage and cultivate existing relationships with funders to secure and expand recurring revenuestreams
  • Oversee NCLC’s portfolio of policy work, particularly pending and existing federal policy
  • Cultivate and grow NCLC’s relationship with policymakers and related organizations

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated background in nonprofit, startup, or campaign leadership
  • Excellent research and writing ability
  • 1-3 years of management experience
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to offer ideas and take ownership
  • The ability to engage effectively with a variety of organization stakeholders, including policymakers and funders
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Demonstration of entrepreneurship and creative problem-solving
  • Strong preference for a former student body president
  • Preferred to have experience in development
