Job Description

Reporting to the President and the Executive Vice President (PRES/EVP), the Controller will perform high-level accounting functions including: budget development, oversight and management, month-end transaction processing, monthly financial report preparation, cash flow planning/analysis and outside audit facilitation. Responsibilities include:

  • Oversight and coordination of all financial services
  • Providing reports to and dealing with federal banking regulators
  • Supervising employees performing accounting, billing, and collections duties
    • Developing and Monitoring budgets and making recommendations to Management during financial planning phases
    • Maintaining general ledger and supporting journals according to good accounting practices
    • Preparing and posing journal entries to the general ledger
    • Working with Program Staff to develop program and grant application budgets
    • Preparing the general ledger trial balance and monthly financial statements
    • Providing direction and assistance to other organizational units regarding accounting and budgeting policies and procedures and efficient control and utilization of financial resources
    • Assuring financial documents are completed and submitted timely as required by the funding agencies and the Board of Directors
    • Preparing financial statements, business activity reports, cash flow reports, budgets, and other reports required by agencies
    • Oversight of all accounts receivable records in an orderly manner with appropriate documentation
    • Oversight of petty cash funds to assure appropriate use within established policies and procedures
    • Advising President and Executive Vice President on short-term and long-term cash flow
    • Monitoring financial activities and details, such as cash flow and reserve levels, to ensure all legal requirements are met
    • Recommending and implementing sound financial and business practices and procedures
    • Coordinating the annual audit of the financial records and the agency’s Form 990 and A-133 Audit
    • Coordinating the maintenance of loans receivable records to permit accurate calculation of interest and loan payoffs
    • Maintaining current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards
    • Ensuring timely reporting of financial activities and benchmarking of CDFI funds to federal agencies
      • Ensure timely reporting to private funders as necessary



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance, CPA (MBA a plus)
    • At least 8 years’ experience in a financial role, with at least 2 of those years being in a management position
    • Experience with federal government grant reporting requirements
    • Experience with multi-programming/fund accounting
    • Experience supervising staff
    • Excellent communication and leadership skills
    • Familiarity with federal grant reporting requirements and A-133 requirements.
    • Experience with QuickBooks, MS Office
    • Passionate, self-aware, ethical, positive, mission-driven, and self-directed with a sense of humor


  • Experience working with a Board of Directors in a non-profit financial role
  • Experience working with multiple entities and CDFIs a plus
  • Experience working in/with a bank
