Co-Coordinator Tropical Biology Summer Course

The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) is currently seeking applicants for one Co-Coordinator position in the Tropical Biology summer course in the Undergraduate Study Abroad Program. The course is a 4-week introduction to tropical biology and field research that visits 3 OTS field stations and one other site in Costa Rica. Students will complete faculty-led and independent projects as well as attend classroom lectures and field/laboratory activities on tropical biology and scientific research. Students will receive course credit from Duke University.

Successful applicants will work closely with the Tropical Biology summer course Coordinator (Dr. Anjali Kumar), the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Programs (Dr. Jennifer Stynoski), and other OTS staff in the design and implementation of the 2014 Tropical Biology summer course. The Tropical Biology Coordinator and Co-Coordinator will be responsible for on-site supervision and coordination of program activities as well as curriculum development and teaching. This is a full-time appointment beginning June 16, 2014. At least a six-week commitment is required. The job responsibilities include playing a support role in all aspects of the course for the coordinator such as editing student papers, arranging and carrying out logistical and curriculum details, assisting students with design and implementation of field research projects, teaching in lectures and forest walks, managing student health and behavioral issues, etc.




– Ph.D. or M.Sc. in biology, ecology, conservation biology or a related field

– Professional experience in teaching field biology

– Professional experience in supervising undergraduate field research

– Excellent communication and organizational skills

– Bilingual (Spanish/English) desirable, fluent English required

The position is a 6-week contract with an anticipated start date of June 16, 2014, and an anticipated end date of July 25, 2014. The position includes course travel at various sites in Costa Rica from June 23, 2014 through July 22, 2014.
