Seeking Clinical Specialist

Give an Hourâ„¢ (GAH), a national nonprofit in the Washington, D.C., area, providing free mental health services to military personnel and their families, is seeking a versatile, locally based, full-time Clinical Specialist for the position described below.

Description of Position:

  • The Clinical Specialist serves as an expert on mental health and military culture for Give an Hour and the mental health professionals who volunteer in our network; holds trainings for GAH and partner mental health professionals and participants; represents Give an Hour at meetings, conferences, and other events; and performs other clinical- and research-related tasks as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach to mental health professionals and work with corporations, major national mental health associations, behavioral health listing agencies, and military entities to encourage mental health professionals to volunteer with GAH
  • Locate, coordinate, and supervise GAH providers to attend partner events (for example, Wounded Warrior Project retreats)
  • Provide basic training in military culture and subjects such as trauma-induced mental health issues to GAH providers and to our partners and other interested parties; with assistance from WWP, also provide training to GAH providers tailored to the Project Odyssey and Family Caregiver programs, largely via travel to monthly trainings
  • Apply for and maintain Continuing Education credits for trainings
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to match injured veterans and caregivers with specific appropriate GAH providers located near their hometowns
  • Establish GAH protocol for recording, monitoring, and tracking provider progress with wounded warriors, noting feedback, services given, and outcomes of GAH providers’ engagement with the wounded veterans and caregivers
  • Assist partners such as WWP in assessing the needs of their alumni seeking mental health services, defined as those warriors and caregivers served by WWP and partner programs, not just those warriors and caregivers who participate in retreats, and recommend an appropriate counselor or GAH volunteer, based on location, specialty, and therapeutic technique
  • Represent Give an Hour at meetings, conferences, and other events, giving presentations, moderating panel discussions, and appearing on panels as necessary
  • Perform clinical- and research-related tasks as necessary

Job Requirements:

  • Desire and ability to perform at a superior level via virtual office
  • Direct knowledge of military culture, multiple deployments to war zones, and subsequent mental health issues that arise within the military communitythrough military service, a loved one’s service, or professional experience in the VA or other military setting
  • Master’s level degree and license in social work, counseling, psychology, or related field
  • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to respect delicate relationships with other organizations and clients
  • Flexibility regarding occasional travel
