Business Manager

Massachusetts Horticultural Society is seeking an experienced, reliable and organized individual with
financial and accounting acumen to serve as Business Manager.

Founded in 1829, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society is one of America’s oldest charitable
institutions. Massachusetts Horticultural Society is dedicated to encouraging the science and practice
of horticulture and to developing the public’s enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of plants and
the environment. Located in the historic Elm Bank Reservation in Wellesley/Dover, Massachusetts the
horticultural center and the Gardens at Elm Bank provide opportunities for people of all backgrounds to learn about plants, gardens, design, and the natural world through its educational programs and hands-on learning opportunities.
Reports to: President/Executive Director
20 hours per week
 Business Manager Responsibilities:Finance and Accounting: controller skills·
Manage the accounting system: bookkeeping, accounts payables, accounts receivables,
payroll, general ledger entries and purchase orders·
Manages vendor relationships·
Oversee systems for setting, collecting and assessing revenue from: development,
membership, and our enterprise function business·
Assist in budget development and long-range financial planning·
Provide monthly accounting of all income and expenditures, cash-flow and balance sheet
accounts, with actuals to budgets·
Works closely with the President/Executive Director and the Finance Committee, a committee led by the Board of Directors
·Provides financial information on a regular basis t
o be presented to the Board of Directors
regarding Mass Hort’s financial status
·Prepare for the audit and provide all necessary information to outside auditors
Human Resources Administration
· Manage all Health, Life, Disability, Dental, Pension, and COBRA accounts
·Manage enrollment of all accounts and ensure compliance
·Works with insurance brokers
·Manages technology contracts for IT services
Ideal Candidate’s Qualifications and Skills
·At least 5+ years of middle or senior level accounting/financial management experience
·Skilled in GAAP and financial reporting
·Non-profit experience a plus
·Experience with Accounting Software, QuickBooks preferred
·Exposure to HR and Facilities issues a plus
·Excellent communication skills
·High ethical standards; trustworthy and discretion
to maintain confidentiality
·Excellent problem solving skills
·Passion for plants and the environment and the 184-year legacy of Massachusetts Horticultural Society
·Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
