The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a dynamic and innovative teacher of Biology starting the end of April through June 11, 2014. Candidates should have experience teaching Biology to students at the secondary or college level. They should be prepared for the special claims of an independent school and for the commitment required by a demanding and rewarding academic environment. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they stir and share the intellectual energy and curiosity of our well-prepared and motivated students and when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit and diverse community.

The College Prep science program is unique, innovative and rigorous. Three year-long courses are required: Physical Science which interweaves physics and chemistry to provide a basis for further study of laboratory sciences; Chemistry, taken in the sophomore year; and Biology taken in the junior year. Beyond the required courses, the vast majority of College Prep students choose to take one or more science electives. The year-long electives are Advanced Physics, AP Physics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science. Recently offered semester electives include Astronomy, Issues in Science, Genetics and Animal Behavior. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material in classes. Science teachers work closely with one another in course-based teams and across the curriculum.

This position involves teaching three classes, each with approximately 16 students. In addition, the teacher should be prepared to spend additional periods getting to know and helping students outside of the classroom. The salary is competitive. All faculty enjoy sharing a prepared lunch every day.
