Position Summary:

GFS’s Family Literacy Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and evaluating GFS’s family literacy programs for adults and their children. The Family Literacy Coordinator will work closely with other GFS staff to ensure the tight integration of centered based and school based literacy programs. This is a key position for the continued development of GFS’s early literacy efforts to address the literacy crisis in the community. This position reports to the Director of Programs.


  • Implement and evaluate GFS’s family literacy programs, specifically the Yes We Can!Read! Initiative
  • Conduct outreach and recruit volunteers and participants for various GFS programs
  • Lead reading mentor training sessions
  • Coordinate volunteer reading mentor schedules and communicate with teachers and school staff
  • Teach Parent Engagement Workshops
  • Evaluate and assess program effectiveness with established tools
  • Facilitate after school literacy program for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students
  • Coordinate Family Literacy Nights
  • Liaise with community partners to coordinate service delivery
  • Create reports necessary to comply with grant requirements
  • Conduct smooth operation of on-site Children’s Library
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Background in early literacy and child development
  • Self-starter able to take initiative
  • Ability to work closely with different professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Proficient in use of computer software including MS Office and the Internet
  • Teaching/facilitation experience with adults and children
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Must have valid California driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation.
  • Strong reading/writing skills in English and Spanish

  • At least two years of experience working with families
