The Lead Environmental Educator works with Parks & People Foundation’s (PPF) K-8 Environmental Education (EE) after-school program, KidsGrow! at Franklin Square Elementary/Middle School. PPF’s EE programs are designed to provide homework help, STEM literacy and enrichment while also providing meaningful experiences in nature and exposure to green careers. KidsGrow! immerses students in the discovery of watersheds and urban ecosystems through interactive, project-based lessons and activities, field investigations, and creative arts projects. Students are engaged in topics related to water quality, soils, ecology, biodiversity, air quality, natural resources, food gardening, health, and nutrition. KidsGrow features service learning opportunities where students engage in restoration and community outreach projects that encourage students to become environmental stewards in their own communities.

Assist lead educator with the following tasks
1.) Classroom and Preparation:
– Teach and deliver hands-on interactive EE lessons to Baltimore City youth and integrate age appropriate environmental literacy content.
– Take students outside every day for outdoor learning (unless directed by the program coordinator).
– Provide homework assistance for all subject areas.
– Help engage students and further their understanding of core curriculum concepts through one on one tutoring and mentoring.
– Lead students in outdoor activities and service projects.
– Help implement youth lead service learning projects.
– Monitor student behavior and implement disciplinary procedures according to the rules, guidelines, and rewards outlined in the Environmental Educator training manual.
– Maintain and organize supplies, equipment, tools, worksheets, journals and other materials necessary for implementing lessons. This will include set-up, preparation, and clean-up of field investigations, experiments, service projects, inventory of supplies in office storage units and at program sites.
– Deliver and return student pre and post assessments and permission forms according to schedule.
– Record daily student attendance.
– Provide program coordinator and manager with feedback and creative input on curriculum content, adaptations, and possible improvements.
– Submit timesheets correctly and on time.
3.) Program Culture and Operation:
– Pre/Post snack and supper preparation and clean up.
– Assist with group and program-wide activities and create an overall enthusiastic and exciting environment.
– Participate in all required program evaluations and surveys.
– Attend all monthly EE staff meetings and quarterly professional development and curriculum trainings (one Saturday per quarter required).
– Attend a required training Monday, September 15, 2014 ; Friday, September 19, 2014 (time to be determined).
– Bachelor’s degree preferred.
– Excellent computer skills and ability to access a computer daily to check email.
– Experience working with inner city, at-risk youth required.
– At least 2 years of experience working with elementary or middle school youth in either formal classroom instruction or an informal setting such as a nature center, summer camp or after-school program.
– Background check must be completed within 2 – 4 days of being hired.
– Educational background or experience in teaching biology, ecology or environmental and outdoor education and/or a strong interest in environmental stewardship and education is a plus.
– Must be available Monday through Friday between 2:45 ; 6:45 pm school year from September 23, 2014 through May 29, 2015 (holidays follow the Baltimore City Public School schedule).
Hours: The Assistant Educator will work: 20 hrs/week, 2:45pm ; 6:45pm Monday ; Friday.
This is a part-time, hourly position, with no benefits.
