Adventure Leader (Seasonal)

Adventure Camp Leaders are responsible to the YMCA Director of Outdoor Education. General Responsibilities include co-leading and supervising a group of young people (ages 11-16) on co-ed multi-adventure trips throughout the Northeast, one to two weeks in length. Trip Leaders are responsible for camper’s health, safety, and participation in all aspects of adventure camp life.

Specific Responsibilities
• Be a positive role model to all campers in conversation, language, manners, actions and appearance
• Create a safe and positive learning environment for campers to experience growth and success
• While in camp, work as a team with co-leaders and supervisors to help plan and prep the trip experience
• While in camp, help instruct activities including Leave No Trace camping skills, waterfront activities, land
sports, or arts, depending on your skill set
• Foster a cooperative community setting within trip group
• Serve as a positive, respectful member of the Camp Takodah staff
• Complete and submit all required trip documentation (trip reports, accident reports, trip budget, and evaluations)
• Manage the group in the front-country, including transporting campers in 15-passenger vans, purchasing
and providing meals, planning trip logistics, prepping backcountry or outfitter trips, communicating with Camp Directors and nurses
• Work and live in accordance with Camp Takodah’s personnel policies and procedures
• All other aspects of trip management to ensure the physical and emotional safety of all campers

* Age 21 or older preferred
* Strong communication skills; a team player, team leader, and team builder
* Experience working with children/teens in wilderness setting
* Experience in forms of adventure travel to be lead
* Current WFR /WFA and CPR
* Lifeguard certification a plus
* Other Appropriate professional certification a plus (ACA, AMGA, etc.)
* Experience with team building initiatives and ropes course facilitation a plus
* This position demands a desire to work and play in the Outdoors, enthusiasm, humor, patience, energy,
* maturity, focus, and creativity on a continual basis in order to be an effective leader

About Us: The Cheshire YMCA Camp Takodah’s history goes back over 95 years. Our programs serve over 750 youth across the Spring and Fall season each year. We provide quality programming, which develops positive values that enrich the spirit, mind and body. Lead by our dedicated staff, participants in Takodah Outdoor programs are given the unique opportunity to acquire outdoor skills, discover personal values, increase their self-esteem, develop compassion for others, and build group cooperation.

Compensation: Starting at $300/week. 8-10 week positions available, including paid staff training. Room/board available when not on trip. Opportunities for training (i.e.: WFA, AMGA Top Rope Site Manager)

Season: June 24-August 25
*Extended employment opportunities are available beyond our summer season in our Outdoor Education program. Outdoor Education Seasons: May;June & September-October
