Adult Education Program Manager

Reporting to the Director of Education Programs, the Adult Education Program Manager is part of an eight-person staff team that coordinates, develops, manages and evaluates New York Cares’ volunteer education programs.

This position manages 50 to 60 ongoing programs that serve immigrants and adult learners, with a particular emphasis on English conversation and citizenship preparation. Included in this portfolio is shared management of the New York Cares Volunteer Tax Preparation program, which yielded $19.5 million in tax refunds for low-income New Yorkers last year. The manager is expected to expand programming by identifying new project sites and developing new program models.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and implementing well organized and high quality volunteer service programs
  • Cultivating and maintaining collaborative relationships with partner agencies
  • Developing curricula for new and existing education programs
  • Recruiting, supporting and training volunteers and team leaders
  • Managing multiple project budgets and supplies
  • Evaluating programs by attending volunteer projects and visiting existing partner agencies
  • Providing development opportunities for volunteers and community partners
  • Conducting community outreach to identify new partner agencies for specific program areas
  • Conceiving, planning and staffing one-time volunteer projects for corporate volunteer groups
  • Assisting, as necessary, with organization-wide initiatives such as Annual Events and development activities

New York Cares volunteer projects, trainings, and events take place before and after work and on weekends, requiring the Program Manager to work several evenings per month and multiple weekend days a year.


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years experience in non-profit management
  • Interest and experience in adult education, with a focus on English for Speakers of Other Languages, immigrant affairs, tax programs and/or GED preparation
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and volunteerism
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, including an ability to manage and multi-task many projects
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Flexible schedule, including the ability to work late evenings and occasional weekends, as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of agency contacts and volunteers
  • Familiarity with the New York City social service agencies
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred

Salary Range:

  • Mid-$30K, commensurate with experience
