Gifts of Property and Real Estate

Personal Property (Gifts in kind)

The gift of a prized possession can be a truly wonderful expression of the depth of appreciation a donor feels toward Antioch University New England. Items such as works of art, rare books, stamps, antiques, and manuscripts tend to reveal the benefactor on a more intimate level by providing a glimpse into private life. The gifts also present unique opportunities for the donor.

  • Donations of personal property during your lifetime not only reduce your taxable estate, but also reduce your taxable income in the year of the gift.
  • You are entitled to a charitable deduction on your income tax amounting to the property's full, fair-market value as documented by a third-party appraisal or receipt.

Personal property and real estate gifts can not require AUNE's commitment to a significant additional expense for present or future use, display, maintenance, administration, or sale. You must demonstrate proof of sole ownership. AUNE's acceptance also takes into consideration the usefulness of the item as it pertains to the AUNE's mission and purpose.

Because of the special consideration involved with gifts of personal property, please contact the Office of Development for a consultation prior to finalizing your plans.
