Federal Stafford Loan

The Stafford Loan Program is a federally guaranteed student loan program. Most graduate students are eligible to borrow up to $20,500 per academic year provided they meet eligibility criteria. Up to $8,500 of this amount may be subsidized. To determine eligibility for Stafford Loans complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Subsidized

Interest Rate: 6.8 percent fixed. The government pays the interest while you are in school.
Maximum Loans: $8,500 per academic year; lifetime of $65,500 including undergraduate loans. Students expecting refunds for living expenses normally receive proceeds around the fourth week of classes.
Fees: Processing and guarantee fees may be deducted from each loan disbursement by your lender.
Disbursement: Loans are disbursed in up to three equal portions, depending on the number of terms in your loan period.

Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan

Interest Rate: Same as Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan except that interest begins to accrue upon the first disbursement. You have the option to pay accruing interest. This will help limit the total interest capitalized once you enter repayment.
Maximum Loans: $20,500 per academic year less any Subsidized Stafford Loan; lifetime of $138,500 including undergraduate loans. Doctoral students in Clinical Psychology have a lifetime maximum of $224,000
Fees: Same as Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan.
Disbursement: Same as Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan.
