Sample Capstone ProjectVernal Pool Creation as Part of Wetland Replication: A Study of Fire Ponds as Successful Breeding Habitats for AmphibiansThis student’s comparative study analyzed the reproductive success of amphibians in vernal pool setting that had been artificially created in the establishment of fire ponds within the boundaries of the Wendall State Forest in Massachusetts. The goal was to establish what characteristics in such artificially created wetland habitats would most impact the breeding success of resident amphibians. Beyond an initial literature review, the field data collection focused upon the vegetative community surrounding the different ponds and the extent of shading over the waters of these ephemeral water bodies. In addition an analysis of the soil types for the different fire ponds was made. Throughout the study period, both the area covered by water and the depth of the water was recorded. In addition abiotic parameters as pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature was taken and recorded. Concurrently weekly observation of the Ambrystoma maculatum (spotted salamander) spermatophores assessing the quantity, quality, viability and developmental stages of these amphibian egg masses, larva and metamorphs.
