Research SpecializationsEcology is by definition interdisciplinary and now more than ever there is a need for multidisciplinary dialogue and research. By interdisciplinary, we refer to the integration of a wide range of concepts and ideas, acknowledging that environmental issues cross the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Ecological thought has a broad and intriguing literature, one that cannot be studied in a disciplinary context. This literature is crucial for the development of environmental practitioners and researchers alike. The doctoral program allows students to become thoroughly familiar with this literature; to evaluate it, to consider its research applications, and to amplify it, according to the circumstances of the learner and the unique problems he or she faces. The following fields of inquiry reflect the interests of our students and faculty:
