MJ is the director of Health Services and Assistant Director of Counseling Services at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. She also teaches both undergrad and graduate classes in the field of psychology including courses on environmental psychology and outdoor wellness skills training. She was a 2002-2003 Antioch Spirit Scholarship recipient and co-creator of the ’Connecting Kids’ restorative justice program in Rutland, Vermont.
This program focusing on teaching alternative coping strategies incorporating outdoor spaces to first time juvenile offenders. MJ has spoken on restorative space and coping to Maryland state senators at John Hopkins medical school and at numerous national and state conferences. She published an online course for therapists, through the American Counseling Association, on the topic of suicide and college responsiveness, and recently joined members of the Jed Foundation to create a suicide response protocol for colleges and universities.
She is presently completing both her national counseling certification and state licensure for mental health counseling. After using a blended research strategy incorporating clinical assessment, clinical interview, and written survey, MJ is now ABD. She is writing her dissertation on the relationship between routine childhood exposure to nature and the use of restorative space as a coping strategy in adulthood and will defend in 2007. MJ Has also received national certification as a counselor. She won the outstanding professional leadership award from the American College Counseling Association at the international conference, held in Montreal in May 2006, for her work training graduate interns, teaching CEU workshops throughout the US for therapists, and for conference presentations on the environment and mental health.
