John Halloran, PhD Student - PhD Program - Environmental Studies - Antioch University New England
John Halloran
John Halloran, a doctoral candidate in the Environmental Studies program at Antioch University New England, has spent 30 years in public education helping kids to understand and appreciate their local environments and cultivating a sense of place. He has centered his work around the way in which public schools teach students about the environment in the age of standards for each discipline.
John has projected a new breed of educator, the Naturalist Educator, as a way to help children return to a knowledge of local natural history, while at the same time still meeting standards. This interest springs from his work as the Coordinator of Experiential Learning for the Newburyport (MA) School District, as a member of Massachusetts’ Environmental Secretary Durand’s Advisory Board on Environmental Education (SAGEE), and as a founding member of the North Shore Environmental Education Partnership, which is engaged in implementing the Massachusetts Environmental Education Plan (MEEP).
John’s dissertation research is focused on identifying and interviewing exceptional educators across New England to aid in defining the concept of a Naturalist Educator by viewing it through the lens of their personal experiences. While in the doctoral program, John has participated in environmental projects in Inner Mongolia and Puerto Rico through EarthWatch Teacher Fellowship Grants and was named the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Conservation Educator of the Year in 1999.
