ES PhD: The Environmental Humanities
The environmental humanities integrate a broad range of humanistic approaches through an environmental
lens, including history, the literary arts, the visual arts, humanistic geography, and cultural diversity. As a wellspring of wisdom, the humanities can be both a sanctuary from crisis and a means to strengthen the
environment. One hallmark of our program is the integration of the scholarship and action that fosters
the depth of understanding needed to address pressing environmental issues.
Our students and faculty engage the humanities scholarship in communities facing environmental issues
ranging from toxic waste sites to displacement and planning. Our students and faculty have worked with
indigenous and non-indigenous communities to tell the stories of those resisting and those recovering from mines, dams, hazardous waste sites, steel fabrication, and logging in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. A central theme running throughout the courses is how telling stories of person, place, and community can support healing of the environment.
