ES PhD: Ecology and Conservation Biology
We are interested in the critical area where science, the public, and the practice of conservation biology overlap— where the on-the-ground efforts to protect our remaining biological diversity occur. We believe that the practice of conservation biology must be rooted in the principles of ecology and an understanding of the sociopolitical arena in which the conservation problem is being played out.
Conservation biology is acknowledged to be a crisis driven field, and we understand, support, and nurture
the need for scientists to become communicators. Our faculty and students work at multiple ecological scales,
honor diverse methodological approaches, and examine the variety of Earth’s systems from marine, freshwater, terrestrial, and island, from tropical to temperate zones.
Our program has an emphasis in
- The application of theoretical aspects of community ecology to conservation,
- Tropical ecology and conservation, and
- Endangered species management and recovery.
We focus on multidimensional conservation issues that incorporate facets of environmental education, environmental decision-making processes, resource management, and land use planning with the ecology of species, communities, ecosystems, and landscapes. Our faculty and students have worked in such diverse places as New England, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, East Africa, Madagascar, and Indonesia.
The key interests of students and faculty:
- Theoretical and Applied Ecology
