ES PhD: Environmental Decision-Making and Policy
We focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of governmental decision making as it applies to
environmental issues. Attention is given to all levels of government including international agreements,
federal regulatory decision making, tribal government and town planning, and community participation,
especially of children and elders. While much of our work is applied in the United States, faculty and students have experience in Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
We approach theoretical aspects of environmental decision making from the perspective of public
participation, environmental communication, power and environmental justice, social movements, community
action, and theories of democracy.
The applications we study can be taken from any area, and have focused on forest management, coastal
management, ecosystem management, risk management, mining, public health, dams, and water.
The key interests of students and faculty:
- common property resources

- risk analysis and communication
