Amber Pairis, PhD Student - PhD Program - Environmental Studies - Antioch University New England

Amber Pairis

Amber PairisAmber Pairis is a doctoral candidate in the Environmental Studies program at Antioch University New England. She has focused her work in the field of Conservation Biology where she has spent her career conducting research on a variety of endangered species projects for both the Federal government and nonprofit organizations. She has spent the last three years working on the remote Hawaiian Islands conducting research on marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds and vegetation restoration. She is currently working closely with military officials on Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in Southern California to enact protocols that benefit both endangered species protection and military training goals while addressing large-scale land management issues.

Her dissertation research will investigate how ecosystems function in the face of human pressure by examining the role of fire ecology in the coastal sage scrub community (CSS) and how it impacts population dynamics of the threatened California Gnatcatcher, an umbrella species for the entire CSS community.

“There are not many places that you can work with and learn from so many amazing people. ANE has a dynamic learning community of environmental professionals and students who challenge and inspire each other to move beyond comfort areas and succeed in ways you never thought possible.”

Specifically, the work addresses how we can maintain biodiversity through maintenance of ecosystem processes and disturbance regimes in the face of fragmentation and human demands on the land. Amber is committed to bridging the gap between science and management in order to make positive decisions about the protection of land, its inhabitants and our overall quality of life. When ever possible she provides opportunities for communication and interaction between scientists, managers and the local community.

Amber’s current research in California and funding for the program has been made possible through the US Navy, The Garden Club of America and Cornell Lab of Ornithology, The New Hampshire Charitable Foundations 2001 Switzer Environmental Fellowship and a Racial/Ethnic Scholarship from Antioch University New England.
