EECareers: What EE Alumni Are Up to Now

According to John Falk, head of the Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI), "Over 90% of lifetime learning takes place outside school on subjects that matter to people intensely." The statistic is reflected in the opportunities that have become available to our students who have gone on to be educators and leaders in various venues, ranging from nature centers, zoos, farms, schools and aquaria to non-profit organizations, business, and academic and governmental agencies, to name only a few.

Here are a few examples of jobs recent graduates have taken:

  • Educator, New England Aquarium—Boston, Massachusetts
  • Education Director at regional nature centers in northern New Hampshire and Boston, Massachusetts
  • Community college environmental studies faculty in the midwest
  • Education and outreach program director for climate change initiative that seeks to connect research scientists with educators—University of Maine
  • Conservation district program manager focused on creating a sustainable food system and related education initiatives—New Hampshire
  • Education director for watershed non-profit organizations—Boston, Massachusetts and Connecticut
  • Outreach Director for an international educational program—Massachusetts
  • Outdoor education and team building program director in the midwest
  • Sustainability coordinator for college campuses in the northeast
  • County-wide sustainability coordinator—New York
  • City Recycling Coordinator—Massachusetts
  • Educator for the Tennessee Valley Authority, Land between the Lakes
  • Classroom teacher
  • Missouri Botanical Garden Program Director, connecting teens with local environment, especially using GIS technology as a mapping tool to learn local geography, St. Louis, Missouri

Naturalist and Tour Guide

"AUNE helped me to recognize that people have different learning styles and learn at different speeds. By knowing this, I build multiple ways of presenting material into the curriculum, and design repetitive lessons to allow for individual learning speeds. Also, a broad general knowledge of many aspects of natural history...allows me to teach from different perspectives and relate better to the students."

Missouri Botanical Garden

"I have the most amazing job working for the MO Botanical Garden at an education center called the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center… The project combines GIS technology, (another good Antioch move I made to take a GIS class), MITAR (a computer game MIT has developed), and service-learning (my place-based education background from AUNE is serving me well here). It's an after school program, but the intent is for the teachers to eventually integrate at least some of what they are learning into their curriculum."
