The Role of Environmental Science in Environmental Studies Curricula

As the oldest environmental studies graduate department in the country, and possibly the world, we have had the luxury of developing truly interdisciplinary courses and curricula. The department has 19 core faculty that represent a wide variety of disciplines including: conservation biology, conservation psychology, ecology, economics, education, environmental history, environmental policy, geology, the humanities, hydrology, law, soil science, waste management, and wetland science.

Although many graduate programs are focused solely on environmental science, we feel that a multi-disciplinary approach is critical for solving complex environmental issues. That being said environmental science is a necessary component of all our programs in the Department of Environmental Studies with one half of our faculty having terminal degrees in some branch of environmental science and two of our programs
