I grew up on Black Mountain in Dummerston, Vermont. I spent my childhood scrambling over rocks, sitting by streams and gazing at the stars. That fired an early passion for earth sciences, planetary geology and astronomy. But it was a deeper calling that inspired my lifelong interest in bringing two worlds together — one world of solid ground and matter, and another potent but elusive world of inner space, and vast silence.
As a result, I have spent my life asking questions about our place on Earth, working for social justice, and sharing my ideas on peacemaking and conservation through writing and education. I have been observing whales in the Gulf of Maine for seventeen years. I have worked with the Student Conservation Association, Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Whale Conservation Institute and the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation.
