Janet Robertson earned her master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Antioch University New England where she is in her final year of her doctoral degree in the same field. Her dissertation research focuses on the relationships between mental health professionals and foreign language interpreters when working with refugee clients in mental health settings.
Before coming to Antioch, Janet worked at an integrated primary care setting in Concord, New Hampshire. In this setting she found her niche in treating refugee families in a medical setting. She worked to broaden awareness of their needs and increase their access to services in the community. In collaboration with the Office of Minority Health and Refugee Affairs, she implemented a refugee health screener into follow up medical visits with physicians at the clinic. She also developed a mental health module designed to educate minority populations on the importance of mental wellness and resources in the community.
During this time Janet was also working at the Payson Cancer Center at Concord Hospital. She worked in collaboration with the oncology social workers at the center to provide quality care to patients. Together they started a four week couples workshop focusing on couples facing cancer together.
Janet is passionate about collaborative and feminist theories, multiculturalism, and social justice. The foundation for her approach stems from her upbringing in Cape Town, South Africa. She believes in fostering mutual respect, gentle challenging, and growth in students. She thoroughly enjoys supporting students in the beginning of their journeys as therapists and watching them grow as professionals in the field.
