Block Nine: The Developmental Shadows in Childhood & Adolescence and The Dynamics of the Waldorf Family and School Counselor

July 1-4, 2010
High Mowing Waldorf School, Wilton, NH

Beginning at 8:30 am, the first day through 4:00 pm, the last day

In this emergent and exciting approach to counseling and care we will explore the very specific soul care gesture that a child or teen needs in each year of development.

We will explore the shadow of each developmental phase and how we as counselors, teachers, and parents can help restore and live within the healing archetype of each phase of childhood and adolescence.

For over 90 years, Waldorf Education has deepened a curriculum based on the evolving consciousness of humanity. This insight can be applied directly to social and emotional support as a child grows, particularly in times of trouble and extra need. Some examples of the parallels we will explore between curriculum and counseling are:

  • The feeling of wonder in fairy tale years and how we can use that insight to help a young child who has been jolted out of a feeling of oneness with the world
  • The connection between the stories of the saints and fables and the goodness they portray for the eight-year-old and how we can apply that goodness to help a child who experiences distress from having seen too much, too soon
  • The young teen is taught revolutionary courage to break out of old restrictive forms, and to create new ways to honor their individual freedom balanced with the need of the society. Yet some teens get caught in a destructive cycle that allow them to break free, yet does little to create new form and can bring about disillusionment.
