Boy Oh Boy! The Needs of Boys and Supporting and Integrating Fathers

with Jack Petrash & Kim John Payne

Boys today are at risk. Studies show that they are far more likely than girls to fail in school, be medicated for their learning differences, and be suspended or expelled for their actions. Ask teachers or parents and it becomes increasingly apparent that the children of concern are more and more often boys.

If we are to assist boys on their developmental journey, we must provide them with guidance, support and most of all models to emulate. This workshop/block will explore a number of subjects related to roles and role modeling for boys.

In this presentation and discussion for teachers, therapists, mothers and fathers we explore:

  • Helping our boys know where healthy assertion ends and aggression begin.
  • Helping boys thrive in the classroom.
  • Boys and work. Helping boys “make their mark.”
  • What boys need in their environment as they grow?
  • Fathers and boys. Rethinking the traditional roles. Role model or real model.
  • The myth of quality time.
  • Helping boys respect girls and women.
  • Honoring boy’s feelings as well as actions.
  • Helping boy’s talk about problems.
  • The Warrior phases. From the early years expressed in the hunter gatherer, then on to the farmer, provider, explorer, athlete, conqueror, navigator, to the revolutionary teenage warrior.
