The History of the PsyD Degree
The Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree was endorsed in 1973 by the American Psychological Association (APA) as appropriate for practitioner-training programs in professional psychology. Since then, the PsyD has been adopted by many graduate professional programs. The PsyD is recognized and respected by State Boards of Examiners and agencies employing psychologists across the nation.
Antioch University New England’s PsyD
Antioch University New England’s PsyD program, founded in 1982, meets the requirements for accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA) and is consistent with the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) educational model with its seven competencies and list of basic science areas. The program’s curriculum prepares students to be eligible for licensure in psychology though a number of states have unique requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they are eligible for licensing in the specific state(s) in which they intend to practice. The program also meets the requirements for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, which has included the program in its list of Designated Doctoral Programs in Psychology.
Our PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology is a five-year, full-time program that includes the completion of a yearlong internship (which may be done half-time over two years). Full-time study is defined as the completion of 30 credits, on average, within a calendar year. Our classes are offered on Monday and Tuesday in a student’s first year, and then on Monday with practicum on other days in subsequent years of the program. Though the classes are concentrated this way, the program delivers the same number of academic credits and contact hours per year as do other programs whose courses are spread over a full week.
In addition to 28 to 30 semester hours of classes described above and to practicum placements during the week (in the second, third, and fourth years of the program) students are also required to take at least two weekend courses or Supervised Independent Studies (1 weekend = 1 semester hour credit) over each program year.
