Research Interests

I seek to engage my students with challenging, hands-on opportunities for exploration and inquiry into some of the most fascinating scientific scenarios out there Life! My classroom takes this journey every day as we explore science that is both meaningful and relevant to our daily lives. We strive to be active members in our communities, working to educate local citizens and ourselves about our environment.

Outdoor adventure leader for ages 8;17. Activities: rock climbing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, caving, backpacking, environmental and outdoor education, challenge courses. Performed maintenance, construction and site improvements, built challenge course elements. Director of Chow designed overnight trip menus, a culinary curriculum and an Excel inventory and purchasing program.

Fridjof Nansen (Sail Training Vessel) Atlantic Ocean 2000
Crew for 6 months and 2005 for one week on the 150-foot, three-mast topsail schooner. Worked with German High School students teaching sailing technique, cooking, repairs, (astro)navigation, weather and marine observations, and more.

Waskowitz Outdoor School (Highline School District) North Bend, WA 20012002
Taught at the residential, environmental, outdoor education center that was converted from an old CCC camp for multi-grade programs.

Outdoor Adventures (Flagstaff Junior Academy, a Montessori School) Flagstaff, AZ 1998;1999
Outdoor Leader for ages 6;13. Activities: rock climbing, hiking, nature activities, trail rebuilding projects and team building.

Camp Sweyolakan, a Residential Camp Fire Boys & Girls Camp Coeur d’Alene, ID 1998;1999. Led outdoor trips including horseback riding, rock climbing, canoeing, backpacking, kayaking and river rafting. Designed/implemented new adventure programs.

Culinary Experience

Worked at a wide variety of restaurants: Seafood Chef at fine dining in Germany, a Swiss Bed and Breakfast in Vermont, started Vegetarian Dinners at Isadora’s Café in Washington State.
