Antioch University New England will underwrite the Monadnock Food Co-op’s event “GMOs: What’s in Our Food?” held at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 12, at the Colonial Theatre in Keene, New Hampshire. Gary Hirshberg, chair of Stonyfield Farm and the Just Label It campaign, is the keynote speaker for this free event.
The public is invited to attend to learn the facts about genetically modified organisms (GMOs). GMOs are created by taking genetic material from one species, whether plant, animal, bacteria or virus, and transferring it to a different species. This differs from traditional crossbreeding, where the genes of the same or very closely related species are exchanged. An estimated 60 to 70 percent of processed foods contain GMOs.
“The Monadnock Food Co-op supports consumers’ right to know if their food contains GMOs,” said Michael Faber, general manager of Monadnock Food Co-op. “Worldwide, sixty-four nations already have this right; why is it being denied to us here in our own country? Please join us on January 12 and learn the facts.”
