David Sobel, core faculty member in the Department of Education, will be a keynote speaker and workshop leader at a conference, From Apathy to Empathy: Reconnecting People and Place, held in Ireland from August 22 to 24.
Leading educators from Europe and the United States expect to attend the conference, which is intended to explore and encourage place-based education in Ireland. Ireland’s Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn, announced the conference in June.
The title of Sobel’s keynote is “Place-based Education: Making School More Like a Farmer’s Market.” He will also teach a workshop called “Childhood and Nature: Design Principles for Educators.” AUNE alumna Jennifer Kramer, ED ’01, a teacher at Guilford Central School in Guilford, Vermont, will also participate in the conference, leading a workshop called “Preserving Community.”
The conference is sponsored by the Burrenbeo Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the Ireland’s Burren region one of the largest karst landscapes in Europe.
