House Museum Learning History Through the Colony Houses

During the 2006-2007 school year, Franklin Elementary School third grade students studied Keene history through animal and human shelters by exploring the Nature Preserve, House Museum, and numerous Colony family homes in Keene. The children discovered wildlife homes at the Preserve and learned how humans have built homes by investigating Native American shelters and the background of Colony houses. The students read picture books about building fairie houses and then went to the Preserve for their last field trip to design structures for the fairies. As a culminating project, the children and teachers created a display that presented colorful student-drawn pictures and factual information about the Colony family houses. This student project, entitled “History Through Colony Houses: An Exhibit of Student Work”, was honored as the featured exhibit at the House Museum during the Spring of 2007.
