Horatio Colony Nature Preserve

Horatio Colony Trust and Antioch New England Institute

Horatio Colony Cabin The Horatio Colony Nature Preserve is a 614-acre wildlife refuge of diverse plant communities, wetlands, rock outcroppings, stone walls and foundations. ANEI's Center for Place-based Education coordinates education and stewardship activities in collaboration with the Horatio Colony House Museum and Nature Preserve Director. Activities include place-based education, public programs, trail work, and research support. Affiliated with Antioch University New England (AUNE) since 1986, Preserve management became a project of ANEI in 2000. In 1986, a vegetation analysis of the Preserve was initiated by AUNE students and faculty. As of the growing season of 2003, students and faculty completed four repetitions of this study.

The House Museum, still furnished as it was when the family lived there, contains heirlooms and fabulous collections of Horatio Colony II, a writer, collector, and world traveler. Located on 199 Main St. in Keene, NH, the Museum is open May 1 to October 15, Wednesday to Sunday, 11AM to 4PM, winter hours by appointment, and admission is free. The House Museum website is a rich source of additional information.

Mountain View The Horatio Colony Trust, written by Horatio Colony II in 1977, gives specific guidelines for the management of the Horatio Colony House Museum and Nature Preserve. The Trust protects the 1806 Federal House and 614-acre forest on West Hill. Project work is consistent with the wishes of Horatio Colony II to educate the public about the Colony Family and the Keene Community's social-cultural history by means of educational programming.
