Community Learning Centers

What if every school had their very own community or environmental educator? In essence, this is what CO-SEED does for a school. By providing a part-time environmental educator (staffed by a local Community-based Learning Center), schools are given the greatest gift of all -- an accessible and dependable resource who is able to provide scientific knowledge, lesson plan ideas, and independent support to teachers. It is the Community-based Learning Center (CLC) representative who acts as a cornerstone in the CO-SEED project – working directly with teachers, students, community members, and CO-SEED project-directors.

What are the roles of the CLC staff?

  • A Teacher – providing direct instruction to students as part of units planned collaboratively with the classroom teacher
  • A Science Expert – providing technical information and demonstration of scientific testing techniques for classroom teachers
  • A Librarian of the Out-of-doors – searching out and evaluating curriculum materials to support standards-based instruction
  • An Outreach Coordinator – providing assistance in contracting community resource people and identifying appropriate locations for field trips, study sites and community-based programs
  • A Communicator – providing written documentation of project activities for school and community publications
  • A Standards Consultant – providing specialized knowledge of your state's curriculum frameworks and assistance in designing activities that best translate the standards into effective curriculum
