The New Hampshire School Leadership Institute
Schoolboard members across New Hampshire play a critical role in the health and vitality of schools and the quality of education. Yet historically there has been little locally available training or support for these hard-working volunteers.
Modeled after the successful Selectperson Institute, the School Leadership Institute was designed to develop the leadership skills of schoolboard members and to improve their ability to work collaboratively with each other, superintendents, administrators, and community members. The Institute provided practical, hands-on training for the challenges schoolboards face through a series of integrated sessions.
About the School Leadership Institute

2003-2006
School board members play a critical role in their community.
A school board's best effort ensures that schools are healthy, vital and providing the types of quality education that children need to thrive. School board members today are often faced with a myriad of challenging decisions – challenges and choices for which they have no previous experience. They are also isolated from their peers on other school boards with no opportunity to learn from others, and to gain from one another's experience.
The New Hampshire School Leadership Institute provided practical, hands-on training and support to help School Board members anticipate and deal professionally with many challenging situations. Through case studies, short lectures and open discussion, the Institute helped participants to develop skills needed to:
- Engage the public in the work of their school district,
- Understand the open meeting and right-to-know laws,
- Build an effective superintendent and board team,
- Grasp the role of the board in special education,
- Work effectively with the media,
- Seek win-win contract negotiations,
- Develop innovative educational opportunities under school choice and other educational trends,
- Constructive engage the public in the budgeting process,
- Â…and much more.
