California Gnatcatcher Study, 1999-2001

Jon Atwood of the Environmental Studies department at Antioch New England Graduate School was contracted through ANEI to lead a three-year study to assess the population of gnatcatchers at Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base in southern California that features one of the few remaining plots of coastal sage scrub. The study, which alerted the base to a severe population crash of the birds, is being used by resource managers to maintain biologically viable natural reserves within a fragmented, highly urbanized landscape.
