Application Criteria

We expect applicants to have a minimum of a B average in their undergraduate or graduate work. We use the GRE results as one way of assessing academic promise. If GRE scores are less than 1,000 (quantitative plus verbal) or the equivalent (297 quantitative plus verbal in the new scoring system), there must be other strong evidence of academic promise.

If GRE scores are less than 1,000 (quantitative plus verbal) or the equivalent (297 quantitative plus verbal in the new scoring system), there must be other strong evidence of academic promise.

Note: The GRE psychology subject test is only offered three times a year: April, October, and November. Applicants should be sure to register as early as possible. Please check with www.gre.org for registration details.

Candidates for admission to the PsyD Program generally fall into three categories: those with bachelor's degrees; those with master's degrees in psychology, human services, or related fields; and those with graduate degrees not directly in psychology (for example, law, nursing, or theater).

Applicants with a bachelor's degree

Applicants do not have to be psychology majors, but for candidates with other types of bachelor’s degrees, at least fifteen hours of clinically relevant coursework is recommended. Some type of entry-level experience with the roles which psychologists occupy is very desirable: researcher, consultant, teacher, psychotherapist, assessor, administrator, supervisor. This experience may take the form of an internship or externship, a senior thesis, a directed study, work experience, or volunteer work. An outstanding academic record with an atypical pattern of preparation and experience will be considered. Applicants should delineate the ways in which their academic and work experiences are relevant to clinical psychology.

Applicants with master's degrees in psychology, human services, or related fields

For candidates with master's degrees in psychology or a related field, their previous coursework along with one year or more of post-master's experience is viewed positively.

Applicants with graduate degrees not directly in psychology (e.g., law, nursing, theater)

Applicants should have the equivalent of at least fifteen hours of psychology-related coursework. Applicants must delineate the ways in which their work experiences and their graduate degree are relevant to clinical psychology.
