Application Criteria

Antioch New England’s PsyD application criteria attend to the evaluation of the whole person. Attending to ability and potential, we rate each of the following areas equally: academic promise; personal and interpersonal competence; and clinical and professional promise.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is used to assess academic promise. All applicants, including those with graduate or undergraduate degress in psychology, must take the GRE general tests and the psychology subject test.

Candidates for admission to the PsyD Program generally fall into three categories: those with bachelor’s degrees; those with master’s degrees in psychology, human services, or related fields; and those with graduate degrees not directly in psychology (for example, law, nursing, or theater).

Applicants with a bachelor’s degree

For candidates with bachelor’s degrees, at least 15 hours of clinically relevant coursework is recommended along with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0. An undergraduate major in psychology and/or a Psychology GRE score of 600 or better is preferred. Some type of entry-level experience with the roles which psychologists occupy is very desirable: researcher, consultant, teacher, psychotherapist, assessor, administrator, supervisor. This experience may take the form of an internship or externship, a senior thesis, a directed study, work experience, or volunteer work. An outstanding academic record with an atypical pattern of preparation and experience will be considered. Applicants should delineate the ways in which their academic and work experiences are relevant to clinical psychology.

Applicants with master’s degrees in psychology, human services, or related fields

For candidates with master’s degrees in psychology or a related field, a 3.0 GPA in their graduate education and preferably in their undergraduate education is recommended. A year or more of post-master’s experience is viewed positively.

Applicants with graduate degrees not directly in psychology (e.g., law, nursing, theater)

For candidates with master’s degrees not directly in psychology, a 3.0 GPA in their graduate education and, preferably, in their undergraduate education is recommended. They should have the equivalent of at least 15 hours of psychologically relevant coursework. Applicants must delineate the ways in which their work experiences and their graduate degree are relevant to clinical psychology.
