Chimpanzee Conservation in Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda: Impacts of buffer zone and land use change.U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. This project aims to strengthen conservation of the endangered Eastern chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) population in Rwanda by reducing key threats to chimpanzee habitat. Habitat edges have profound effects on the spatial distribution of many species and processes and research has shown that the matrix, or type of buffer zone, mediates intensity and frequency of edge effects. Land use around the Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda is currently undergoing changes which may have significant negative impacts on integrity and quality of chimpanzee habitat in the forest, as well as on patterns of human-chimpanzee interactions and disease/health issues. Chimpanzees have been documented using edge areas where buffer zones are being, or proposed to be, altered and chimpanzee-based tourism is also occurring at these locations. The project uses a combination of remote sensing and field research to evaluate the impacts of buffer zone type and land use around the park on chimpanzee habitat and human-chimpanzee conflicts, and to develop guidelines to mitigate these threats. The project takes a multi-partner approach by conducting all work in collaboration with students and faculty from the National University of Rwanda (NUR) and the Rwandan protected area management authority, Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in collaboration with AUNE. This approach strengthens in-country capacity to assess and analyze threats, and opportunities to address threats. It also encourages cross institutional collaborations to advance long term sustainability of the target landscape. This work emphasizes the importance of considering the surrounding matrix in chimpanzee conservation plans and strategies - forests where these animals live are profoundly influenced by land use and land cover change around them.

Featured Blogger.A Year at Mission Hill Project. An exciting 10-part video series chronicling the rhythms and relationships of a year in the life of one of America's most successful public schools.

See firsthand what goes into creating a powerful learning environment for children (and adults). Meet the school's teachers, families and children as they experience the highs and lows of a year of self-discovery, exploration, and frustration. Each episode will serve as a jumping-off point for national conversations about the state of public education as it is - and as it ought to be.

As a featured blogger, I responded to each installment, linking the story of Mission Hill with the work of schools in New England and beyond. You can read more here: http://www.democraticeducation.org/index.php/blog/article/a_wrap_of_a_year_at_mission_hill/ January- June 2013.

Interviewer; Security and Sustainability Forum Webinar.Interviewed Alexandros Washburn, NYC's Chief Urban Designer about his new book "he Nature of Urban Design A New York Perspective on Resilience" . As NYC's Chief Urban Designer, Alex Washburn plays a lead role in implementing PlaNYC. PlaNYC is the plan released by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2007 to prepare the City for one million more residents, strengthen the economy, combat climate change, and enhance the quality of life for all New Yorkers. He brings incredible experience to the job.

An architect by training, Alex was the public works advisor on Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan's staff in the 1990's where he learned about design as a tool in both building cities and building citizens. What he calls "civic virtue". Important experience in getting stakeholder consensus that PlaNYC is better for neighborhoods, better for developers and more resilient for their city.

Alex lays the foundations, in his new book, for a novel approach to design that will help cities to prosper in an uncertain future. He asks his readers to consider how cities shape communities. It is the strength of our communities, he argues, that will determine how we respond to crises like Hurricane Sandy, whose flood waters he watched from his home in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Minnehaha Creek Stromwater Adaptation Ytudy.NOAA, City of Minneapolis MN and Minnehaha Creek Wateshed District. This study aims to quantify the impacts of projected precipitation trends on stormwater
infrastructure in the Minnehaha Creek watershed and explore viable adaptation
strategies. Technical information, including cost analysis of adaptation strategies, is
being combined with a community-led public planning process to provide a framework
for developing local adaptation plans. Questions being addressed by the research team
include:
How is the design storm expected to change in the • Twin Cities area?
• Will the capacity of existing stormwater infrastructure be sufficient to convey this
future design storm? If not, to what degree is flooding expected to increase?
• To what degree will land use changes in developing suburbs amplify effects of
predicted climate patterns on stormwater runoff and management?
• What options are available to adapt stormwater infrastructure to manage predicted
climatic changes? What are the costs of these options? 2013.
