Advanced Training for Group Instruction in the Social Use of Language

Thursday April 16, Wednesday May 6, and Tuesday May 12, 2009

A three-day workshop for professionals working with individuals with social communication deficits sponsored by Antioch New England’s Department of Applied Psychology

Presented by Elsa Abele, CCC, SLP
Speech pathologist, trainer in pragmatic language groups for social interaction, Antioch University New England, Keene, NH.

This course is designed for professionals who run groups and who are seeking to increase their knowledge and practical skills working with individuals with social communications deficits. Classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, special educators, and specialists can use these skills in the classroom. Psychologists, counselors, speech language pathologists, and social workers can apply this training in social skills/social communication groups as well as in clinical work with individuals and families. Material will cover diagnosis of social communication deficits, goal setting, and treatment. Instruction will include simulation of diagnostic components, goal setting for treatment, group composition, and the treatment paradigm.

This course is for individuals that have taken the two-day introductory “What Can I Say?” course and would like to explore the topics in more depth. Students that have not taken the introductory course should plan to read an article in preparation for the course.
