“Ellen offered a wealth of information and insights into people on the autism spectrum.”

“As Ellen and I worked together, and we came up with strategies that actually worked, I felt I could regain control and maybe accomplish some of my goals.”

Presented by Ellen H. Korin, MEd

Sponsored by the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders Training

  • December 3 - 4, 2008; April 2 – 3, 2009

Children and adults with Asperger Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, Non-verbal Learning Disabilities, and related disorders frequently struggle to attain the quality of life of their neurotypical peers. Despite their strong, often superior cognitive abilities, many are unable to acquire meaningful employment, develop relationships, or to live independently. Deficits associated with the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) profile such as Theory of Mind, lack of flexibility, lack of awareness of the world around them, weak communication, social, “presentation of self,” and executive functioning skills are among the contributing factors.

Coaching has emerged as an effective model for helping this population develop the skills needed for more successful functioning and in acquiring skills and abilities that are intuitive within the neurotypical population. This course is an opportunity for educators, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and life coaches, as well as parents to acquire a new approach to working with children and adults on the autism spectrum.

This model, developed by the presenter specifically for the Asperger Syndrome population, has proven to be effective with people from age eight through adult and is useful for other populations as well as for the Asperger Syndrome community. Coaching is an increasingly popular choice because it is collaborative, practical, and effective. There is critical need for knowledgeable coaches who can work with individuals with Asperger’s on life skills, employment, and executive and organizational skills. This workshop will enable you to expand your practice to include this burgeoning population.
